Far less funny and entertaining than the Mel Gibson original, What Men Want is a missed opportunity. Taraji P. Henson is a powerful lead but she's wasted to nothing in this clumsy, shallow comedy that is very disappointing for a movie that's supposed to empower women. Ali Davis is a strong, independent woman portrayed as unlikable and her new ability to hear men's thoughts does absolutely nothing in helping her discover that which she couldn't already figure out. I would like to see this gender-swap idea executed better in a well-written movie.
For once I agree with the critics and not the audience and am glad I gave this movie a shot. 10x10 is an intense thriller that manages to build a lot of suspense for a slow burn. The dynamic between Evans and Reilly is what really kept me invested though as the actors expertly play their roles. The plot was somehow both predictable and unexpected which strangely made it all the more enjoyable.
One of the better horror movies I've seen this week. 2019 has not been a good year for the genre but with IT Chapter 2 coming out later this September there's a chance to change that. The Hole in the Ground is an intriguing possessed-kid story anchored in the impressive performances of Seána Kerslake and James Quinn Markey. It gets better when the plot takes an unexpected turn towards the end but the film as a whole is well wort the watch.
A sweet, heartfelt indie drama telling a story of loss and grief through superb performances. The Bachelors isn't a breakthrough in the genre but it builds upon its cliche tropes and offers something new and worthwhile.
For a film with such a premise A Vigilante is too slow, dull and boring. A powerful performance by Olivia Wilde is wasted on this poorly-executed thriller.
