It had the suspense of an episode of breaking bad as civilian gets sucked into a frightening world of crime with no escape. It was easy to identify with the protagonist. No bonus points for originality, but certainly worth seeing. I liked it on the big screen if you want a simple thriller as far as comparisons to the Taken sequels this was 5 times better than those. I would have preferred something creative, bur was otherwise good.
I watched it last week. I want to watch it again just to analyze it. I love this kind of thing that doesn't give you what you are looking for, but you can't look away. Really cool source material. Very creative artists all around. Wonderful dark mood. Actors you know that make you forget they are acting. Do I care about each charector? Maybe not, but I'm very curious where the tales are going. That is plenty for me. I don't want every movie to check all the boxes. Sometimes I just want to be surprised. This film does that plenty. It is kinda like the Rick and Morty episode where they are watching a comercial and it doesn't end, but follows the actor home. Is that bad writing, I guess, but you can't look away.
Finally, the prequel Episode IV deserves. Not a great movie on it's own, but it adds more depth to the original favorites IV and V. The new characters can't match the multi-chapter stars of the long plot archs, but we know what we need to know about them enough to stick an epic landing by the time the curtain closes. Each hero adds something special, be it humor, darkness, action, magic or weight, but there just isn't time to build epic characters we are used to. The esthetic change is as if from firefly, which I loved and the effects don't go beyond Episode IV, which is great. The Easter eggs make sense, so why complain? Act 3 is where it matters, getting there is slow, but what is the big rush people have? Honestly, this is the movie I expected from JJ Abrams, so consider that a complement to R1. My favorite thing about the movie was that it did lots of little things just right: the right amount of Force, right CGI, right amount of stars, right amount of darkness, great droid, woman warrior, cool use of faith, great vader, thrills, tactics, complexity, ultimate battle, cool new aliens, best use of a death star since IV and best set up to IV than all other prequels combined. And all while using many elements from the SW universe. So yes, best since V is a reasonable but subjective claim, but I'm going with it.
She really struck a beautiful chord with me in her debut "Good Dick" and I was thrilled to see this offered on HBO. Again, her authenticity and heart shine straight through. Her life, her heart and her art are one in the same. If you are struggling with intimacy, watch "Good Dick," and if you want your heart strings tugged even more, watch this story of the endurance of her love of life as she faces the potential unthinkable head-on. It was a welcome bonus to see Jason Ritter braving the storm once again, this time for real, and I am reminded that I watched them together in "Good Dick" 5 times, because it was as impossibly authentic as it gets. That story never ended...
Use the subtitles. The movie is improvised, and you have to bring your own interpretation.the sub-plots and characters hint at more than is fully explained, so you have some creative license. The ending explains very little, and yet remains a very solid climax to about a solid hour of growing and interesting tension. I think this is a version of Stephan King that just got darker and more unhinged. Leaving us to ask, just what the hell kind of screw up did these guys have in Kiev? We never learn what he did to that toddler, and based on what this film is willing to share with us, I don't ever want to know what happened in Kiev.
