I won't deny its importance, but if this is the film that beat out La La Land as best picture... I guess I was expecting something more. Mahershala Ali was so good, and I wish he had more to do in this one. As a film-lover, I was so disappointed that I didn't love this movie.
I was thoroughly entertained. Totally bought all of Simon's plight, and there were a handful of really touching moments. A solid recommendation.
Despite its three-hour runtime, everything about this film remains interesting all the way to the end. All the conversations about art and love were so interesting to hear. I really felt as if I was on this journey with the characters, learning and experiencing things as they did. Speaking of the characters, the performances are just sublime. Seriously, it was as if someone just followed around two people with a camera as they lived their lives. I haven't watched many foreign films, so I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I'm pretty sure I just watched a work of art. It's sad, passionate, and beautiful.
Annihilation takes you on a wild ride. It's a movie that leaves you with more questions than answers. It takes a while to get going, but once I passed the half hour mark, I was pretty engrossed in the mystery it presented; however, occasionally moving back from past to present diffused a lot of tension for me because I already knew who makes it and who doesn't. Personally, I prefer Ex Machina, but I still think this one deserves a watch, especially for film-lovers.
The thought of extending the Toy Story franchise past the third installment terrified me. After having seen the movie twice, I think this is the perfect epilogue to a perfect trilogy. It's relieving to see that Pixar hasn't forgotten what defines these characters. Technically, the animation is spectacular and it's by far the best directed of the saga. I can't wait to watch it again and again.
