I had a wonderful pleasure of seeing this at the Bakely Theater in Fox Studio last night. While it was amazing to see a real studio and a backlot and see a real set. Something for me to inspire to one day I came in with an open mind ready to love it. I mean look at this trailer its awesome.
Let's start with the positives really fast.
The plot is awesome. A young buisnessman has to get a CEO back to sign some papers, but where the CEO is it's not exactly a "sane" place.
Finally we don't have the cliche high school kids going to a dumb cabin or dective going to an Asylum, that was great! Matter of fact original. The cinematography was beautiful in every sense of the word if you ask me. I loved the way it was shot, the use of color was great. I loved all preformances, especially Dane Dehaan as Mr. Lockhart. The girl, Mia Goth was awesome too.
The movie does an interesting thing which is not have jump scares. Matter of fact it took me back to the old 1930's1940's horror movies that I've grown up loving when I was a little dude in some instances. The Asylum looks like an old horror movie set from Universal's 1931's Dracula (ironically). I loved the music, if you want a cool and interesting presence for Halloween you play this soundtrack for it's creepy and makes you feel a little "unwell".
Okay do we have the positives out the way now? Good.
This movie is pretentious, cliched, and really really predictable. There's a straight up James Bond villain in it. Not even joking the villain is a James Bond villain. He's british, wears a nice suit and does something at the end that made me think of a James Bond villain. Instead of trembling thinking this villain is scary I kinda laugh, matter of fact a lot of people laughed too at the huge reveal and the end fight.
You know I just graduated High School and I've written a few screenplays that got into High School film festivals and when I was wathcing the films that weren't mine they were all just like this. Great concepts, themes, scenes, but the story is dumb as shit. Seriously? I mean dude...really? I'm trying my best to not spoil it for you because I know what it's like to spoil it.
This movie is too long. Period. That's not an alternative fact. The back story to Lockhart is dumb and useless I really have no idea why it's needed. The ending holy toledo is dumb and the writings of Student Filmmaker all over it. I really don't get why we needed the ending we had. There's like 3 different endings to this movie with the second one being the best ending. I swear about an 1:50 mins in I was ready to get the fuck out of there. There's a scene in which Lockhart is sitting around doing absolutely nothing for like 5 minutes. The scene dosn't help the story, the character or anything it's ridiculous. And the ending is so cliche and contradicting to everything they wanted.
This movie tries so hard to be as realistic as possible, then the ending comes and...yeah. I want to say exactly everything I disliked about this movie, but it'd be a spoiler. I would encourage you to watch it for the amazingly brutal scenes, but that means you'd have to sit through 2:48 mins of a predictable story with no interesting take on it. You instantly know who the villain is the first frame they show him cause he is a cliche James Bond villain, and when they start talking about "The Barron" you know right away who it is. It's so dumb. I really felt like I was a student film festival instead of a professional film studio cause this is the directing and writings of a student film.
Speaking of realism the shit in this movie is stupid? So you're telling me that this sanatarium has been around since 1901 or whatever BS, and a certain character was young for over 100 years. How? Did they find the Lazarus pit (that's a Batman reference) or did he immortalize this character with a spell off screen (which is another sign of what I hate)? How the fuck has this possible? I need an explanation from the movie not the director or Fox when they start defending it when people start questioning it, but from the source. I'm not even mentioning Fox or anyone, I'm only asking about this student film cause it makes no sense. Which leads to my next critique.
Writing. You see when I was a film student (still am techincally) I use to ask my film teacher (Taggart Lee for this actually in the industry since the 80's will know him) to critcize the hell out of my scripts so I can improve as a writer. Sure he never really liked me as a film maker, but at least I tried and now I think I've dramatically improved as a writer, then there's the favorite. Every film student will know who The Favorite is. They're the ones who do movies with great conepts, cinematography, and have a really dumb movie that tries to be philosophical and sophisticated, but it's reallistically dumber than a Michael Bay movie. With this movie that's the case. This movie was made a Favorite film student who thought he can step up to the big leagues with his amatuer and pretntious films (probably), but here's the thing. When high school is done people don't look for cool visuals and cinematography, we want a good story with good characters. I know this man is a hypocrite (George Lucas), but this quote perfectly sums up this movie; "One of the fatal mistakes that almost every other science fiction film makes is that they spend too much time on the settings creating the enviorment that they spend film time." That is really what this movie is. Too much time to see the sanitarum, not enough time with the story.
In this movie the villain gives everyhting he has, he mind wipes Lockhart, he tortures him and Lockhart comes back unscaved without a reason or establish how he keeps coming back. I know people take shots at movies like the Dark Knight Rises cause stupid shit like Bruce coming back "mysteriously" when the city is blocked off, but at least it showed Bruce Wayne getting demoralized, tortured from within and suffering having a real reason to go back and fight Bane. Lockhart.. NOT A GOD DAMN THING. He's tortured with a beautiful scene, then the next he's back perfectly fine, not even affected really.
Back to the ending; you see there's a pretty cool thing a lot of movies can do and a lot of writers can do which is be creative and inventive as possible, but fuck creativity and interesting endings no. Let's have a straight up James Bond Hero vs. Villain fight with a dumb reveal (that isn't really set up or established in any way possible) and have the good guy win by having the girl distracting him. Literally every character turns into a James Bond steryotype. Mia Goth is a damsel in distress, the villain you already know what I gotta say, Lockhart being an angsty James Bond. Then the last frame happens and it makes no sense. Does the shit have take a while? Why did the last frame have to be that way? Why are they doing the most cliched thing that strongly ressembles Can't Buy Me Love (an 80's romantic comedy by the way) or Easy A? Seriously? Only difference from that ending was a cheesy pop song and Dane Dehaan....oh wait he does something...that makes you confused and delerious since it makes no fucking sense.
Student film - Interesting plot, interesting scenes, cool visuals, terrible story, characters, and god awful contradicting ending.
FINAL VERDICT - 4.8/10
Hi everyone! So let's jump into the review. This movie is fucking amazing! Captain America Civil War is what the perfect Captain America sequel and Avenger sequel! FINALLY AFTER 13 MOVIES we finally have a complex villain with a very interesting motivation. He wasn't weak in my opinion. Zemo was actually a strong villain because he had a reason to do what he did. Words cannot express how happy I am to see Marvel step it up with the villains!
Anyways this movie is amazing on all points. From a human perspective, a political perspective, and from a superhero perspective! I think the story was interesting how everything is surrounded by consequences, vengance, and the biggest theme...FRIENDSHIP! Literally if a building blows up the people are going to go ape shit on the Avengers!
This is by far the best performance from Robert Downey Jr. since Iron Man 1! There is one scene in the end where if you're in film class you can do an entire analysis on Tony Stark alone. This was the most interesting Tony Stark in a long time and his character was awesome! You will feel bad for Tony Stark in the movie.
This movie is honestly a character study for superheroes. There is another scene where the Avengers are discussing Superhero politics and you can study that too. You will sway toward Team Cap or Team Iron Man. This movie could've been where you only see Caps side and that's it, but instead you get everyones perspective from SPider-Man (we'll get to him in the spoiler review) to the star Captain America and it's glorious!
Now I usually never rate anything a 10/10 unless if I feel something or I am truly moved and this movie actually did it. This rating is by being an actual movie too, as a superhero movie 10/10 forsure, but as a film. This movie is both epic, emotional, dramatic and most of all brilliant, but the only 2 movies I've given 10/10 to is the Dark Knight and the Avengers (#1). Guess what? This will be on the pallet of the 3 superhero movies to make me do this, but I give Captain America a 10/10.
PS this movie is so good that Batman v Superman doesn't deserve to be compared to this movie.
Yes. I know. I said I wasn't gonna review it, but then I heard that Darth vader was amazing and Jyn Erso was not an overpowered result of bad writing and that the movie is kind of original (more so than Force Awakens). Let's start things out. I love this move a lot. It's definently in my TOP 10 this year for sure.
All the things I loved were spoilers, but what I loved the 2nd most was the one and only FELICITY JONES as Jyn Erso! I love that even though Felicity is an amazing and one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, she plays her character Jyn with such grit that once she does give the speech about invading the Imperial fleet to steal the plans you do feel inspired and the speech is definently earned after going through this wild and insane adventure! See what I love about Felicity Jones is that she's able to be a badass and be this well rounded character and be in an extremely dark situation and some how find a way to smile...unlike some shitty actors...like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (oh her newest WW movie is on my shitlist. I'm not even giving that crap film a chance in hell. Fuck the DCEU and their Anti-Christ of films). I also love that Felicity was able to be funny and show off that yes badasses can be funny too (unlike Gal Gadot again), she was able to display emotion in the film to where you feel like her pain once something truly bad does land up happening to her.
JYN ERSO IS MY FAVORITE PART OF THE FILM!!! Like all good movies should...instead of Force Awakens...I love that Jyn was ultra badass in this script. It was her character that was badass, much like how Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road or Rita from edge of Tomorrow is badass. She didn't need shitty writing and all of a sudden powers to be badass, she didn't do angry face the whole movie, she didn't talk about how dumb men are, she didn't point out how women are just perfect in everyway and most of all I love that she is vulnerable. Jyn not being an all of a sudden overpowered Jedi makes the stakes higher, mind you we already know she wins or else how would the Rebel's have the plans in Episode 4. I felt worried at the end for Jyn's life when she was in the Imperial home to steal the plans cause it established she can die, she can get hurt, she is human. I love when a character beats peoples ass. I love when my badasses come in to kick ass and take names later, and no one else displays those better than Jyn Erso! She is definently in my Funko Pop collection of Star Wars characters for sure joining Darth Vader, Ahsoka, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Obi Wan, Kylo Ren, Han Solo, and Chewie in my Pop collection!
DARTH VADER WAS PERFECT!! I don't want to say anything more than that.
My biggest criticism is that it relies too much on the Prequels and Episode 4 knowledge to know what's going on, but it's so small that I honestly can pass by it. Another critisim was that there's a certain character (who I loved to see by the way in Episode 4) who appears and he's awesome....but holy shit does that CGI LOOK LIKE SHIT!!! He looked like an angry Michael Shannon with the fish eyes like you have no clue where he's looking. Also another thing that I didn't like was that outside of Jyn Erso none of the characters were as interesting or cool as her, they were just there but I didn't mind since I was having a lot of fun.
This movie is brilliant! In every way shape and form! I love this movie to bits! I love how this film has the brass kahuna's to make the lead character a straight up ASS HOLE and I love it! This girl deservedly so by the way learns a harsh lesson when her crush tries to do something to her that is utterly fucked up! I love that in this movie unlike most female led films (Star Wars Force Awakens and Ghostbusters) there are consiquences to her actions. Everything she does has a repercussion and I fell in love with it. I'm going to address the big elephant in the room. I LOVE HAILEE STEINFELD!! Like I've always had a HUGE CRUSH on this girl since I saw her in True Grit and I saw we're both close to the same age and she's drop dead gorgeous, but holy shit she was amazing. As unbiased as I tried to be not crushing on her, I have to admit she made me fall in love with her even more! After following her career as both a fan and a critic I can say without a doubt that Hailee is not only my favorite part, but she's now on my list of people I will see regardless what genre, how bad it'll be, how good it'll be! I love Hailee Steinfeld and my crush has now increased and I look forward to seeing her in another project.
I am going to go on record and request with all that is holy CAST HAILEE as BLACK CAT in the new Spider-Man series. I mean dude my other favorite woman (who I will speak of soon) played Felicity in Amazing Spider-Man 2 and she was the best part without even being Black Cat, but I know Hailee can definently upstage that!!
Okay back to reviewing movie and not blushing like a shy Junior High School boy over Hailee Steinfeld. I'll admit it I do blush over her.
Alrigth with this said I loved the entire supporting cast! My fav is actually WOODEY HARRELSON!! I loved how his character was written and acted by Woodey "fucking" Harrelson! He wasn't the inspirational nice guy teacher who gave Nadine (played by my biggest crush ever...Hailee Steinfeld) all the perfect advise like a John Hughes movies, instead he was a smart ass who would talk shit back to Nadine's smart ass-ey-ness at him! I loved how he was so calm, subtle, and just an extremely chilled out guy who wants to be left alone eating his lunch!
My other favorite part is actually the brother played by BLAKE JENNER!! See I had the pleasure of seeing this guy rock both small and big screen in Supergirl and (My #3 favorite film this year) Everybody wants Some!! Blake Jenner plays the brother who had it easy, and had god given sports abilities, but he had to put up with all the whacky shit Nadine's done all of his life.....but he dates her bestfriend so he kind of sets this thing on himself this time! I couldn't help but smile and laugh at how he was so clueless to why dating his sisters best friend is at all fucked up! I love how even when Nadine tells him to stop seeing her, he goes a step further and asks her on a date, then they start dating!
This movie was written so well that it's rare for a movie now a days to solve all the subplots, the built up jokes, the character arc's and etc. in one seating making it a cinematic experience since everyone is so hung up on being a cinematic universe instead of a film and this movie did it perfectly! The writing is fast, it's witty and on top of it all it makes you truly care for all the characters in the film! The writing was so good that I actually couldn't point out one thing I didn't like. It's certainly reserved a spot in my TOP 10 which will be shown off soon!
Now onto another woman. Who is now on my list of crushes.
