War for the Planet of the Apes

A film boasting such a talented cast and crew is let down by a poorly conceived plot that values allegory over actual storytelling. Still, the production quality is sky high, but it feels like a missed opportunity to create something truly special.

Christopher Nolan's latest film, Dunkirk, is an epic that lives up to the name of the genre.

Dunkirk succeeds in spectacular fashion. The central theme of sacrifice is wrought out in Tom Hardy's character. An British Air Force pilot, who finds himself in the most essential combat position for the allies. These air battles succeed in spectacular fashion. With few CGI effects, the movie does not contain a single flawed visual. It goes to show how good a film can look when the director chooses to avoid relying on computer effects.

Dunkirk is probably Nolan's most straightforward least complex film in terms of plot structure. However, the streamlined nature of the narrative leaves little to pick apart. Nolan is truly a master at his craft. The impeccable visuals, sound design, editing, and acting result in an intoxicating thrillride.
