Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
1 day ago via Rotten Tomatoes

A Jimmy Stewart and Frank Capra classic; apropos to the current political climate. I guess we all need a shot of an honest man taking a stand against corruption - like Captain America without the powers - minus the partisan bias. But call me cynical, I squirmed at the sappy overt patriotism, including the big media battle between Jeff Smith's small newsletter (aka paper blog) and the corrupt Jim Taylor's newspaper machine. Still, a must-watch for all movie lovers.

A truly moving film, up there with Schindler's List in getting a dramatic glimpse of the suffering and dehumanization the Nazis inflicted on Jewish people during WWII.

Australia (2008)

For a nearly 3-hour long movie, Australia feels rushed and shallow. I didn't dislike the film; it kept my attention. But something felt off through most of it. like elements of Moulin Rouge kept trying to seep in. That last quarter felt better, on the other hand.

Hyde Park on Hudson

Bill Murray's FDR has a fun charm that helped draw me to the movie. But, the film skims over his relationships with Laura Linney's character, Daisy, and his wife Eleanor, as well as Daisy's relationship with FDR's secretary. The "breaking bread," so to speak - hot dog bun, to be more precise - moment with the British king doesn't have the climactic feel it should, considering the importance the film places on the picnic in shaping events leading into WWII. Overall, the movie's okay; not bad, but not good enough to keep me from playing on my laptop.
