I don't understand why this film is rated so low. If people came looking for a straight out action flick I guess that would be the problem. And although there is plenty of action the whole thing is more of a dark, beautiful, sad, heroic, action poem of empowerment in adverse circumstances.
Well, JJ did a great job, considering the disastrous 8th episode did nothing to advance the plot and cut off several options for development. I think he tried to be respectful to the Saga but also to some elements of legends such as borrowing heavily from KOTOR. Several huge and small "up yours" moments to TLJ. Did have a couple of plot holes but this was forgiven given what came before. There were things I wished had been included but there simply was no time. And enjoyable movie overall that tried its best to fix what TLJ broke. Would have been better to have a plan for the trilogy from the beginning.
I though it was quite good. Sets things up nicely for the rest and brilliant twist at the end. Iâ(TM)m not sure what the âtop criticsâ? were smoking when they watched this but perhaps theyâ(TM)re only casual fans?
I don't know what all the low audience scores are all about. Yes, this isn't high intellectual horror, but then I'm a child of 1980s horror - I'm easily pleased. Yes, there are some poorly written and contrived parts, but gosh, given the quality of films these days, It's not bad. I'm truly surprised this isn't at 50% audience scores.
Disney! So I was not interested but then I decided to give it a go anyway. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FANTASTIC MOVIE! Instead, we had a great Han/Chewie partnership but the rest? Come on! Can some one PLEASE go to film school and learn to write a script? So this was not as bad as TLJ but so many missed opportunities and so many problems with the writing of the characters!
A great way to restart the series and introduce some of the politics and intrigue that got Palpatine in a position to be Emperor by the end of the Prequels. The pod race was way too long though. Heck, I even liked the Midichlorines.
