Flight (2012)

This is a film written by and for old school alcoholics. Period. It is well crafted, acted, and directed - except for its fatal flaw. The resolution suggests that Captain Whitaker must go to a Federal penitentiary to pay for his drug and alcohol addiction. When ever did imprisonment heal a chemical dependency disease? When we KNOW that prison environments breed violence, hate, anger, dysfunction. Bob Zemeckis and Gatins are smarter than this. It flies in the face of ALL we know about drug and alcohol addiction.

Had the lead character been an U.S. infantry soldier in Afghanistan who carried ten men out of a hellacious firefight, but had coke and alcohol in his blood - will the Army put him in a Federal prison - or a qualified drug and alcohol treatment program??? This film succumbs to religious orthodoxy as incoherent as hatred of same sex relationships. Fail.

Hyde Park on Hudson

Most reviews are horrified this movie points to the polyamorous relationships built by Franklin Roosevelt - a treasured American icon. Bill Murry does a splendid job of painting an accurate portrait of a man who chose to surround himself with supportive men and women in order not to wallow in his polio. Splendid small novel of a film. Disruptive, annoying to narrow liberals and conservatives - a triumph!!

Silver Linings Playbook

This tale surprises as it must to stay away from typed quicksand. Set in Philly, a home to heroes who train and fight outside expectation. Jennifer Lawrence sets the "inappropriate" bar one notch higher than Cooper and together they even each other onto a romantic pathway of laughs and heart tugs. Nice to see such a little story find so much acceptance. With Robert DeNiro, Chris Tucker, Jackie Weaver, Julia Styles - all in the loving family.
