Vuk's Review of Escape from New York
Escape from New York(1981)
To be completely honest, I didn't enjoy this film as much as I'm "supposed to", nor do I understand why it gained such praise and a cult following. The concept of a whole New York City being used as a giant prison was interesting at first, but later on I just forgot all about that. It was obvious that such a complex would create it's own chaotic social order, so nothing really surprised me. All of the inmates even matched the cliche, dystopian supporting character. As for the character of Snake, I never really cared. There was nothing special about him, he was the cliche tough-guy hero who does the dirty job. Not even the eye patch made him interesting.
The atmosphere was very dark, most of the time the plot was very slow-paced and monotone, even with all the action scenes. I felt really bored, almost falling asleep a few times. Eventually it ended and I watched something else. I'd really like to understand why this movie is supposed to be so great, I just don't get it.
