Pretty good, indeed. The suspense is decently done, the special effects are decent, the fights are decent... well everything is decent; it is even kind of funny.
One of the best examples of a terrible adaptation.
The comedy works, yes. Most of the jokes on the film work ("Change the channel", most of Bison's quotes, Guile's pronunciation), but this is supposed to be an action movie, not a parody or a comedy.
The fight scenes are sluggish and slow, only two of them are memorable (Bison vs Guile, Ryu and Ken against Sagat and Vega) because they aren't ass sluggish.
The soundtrack is forgettable, you won't remember any tune.
But, it can entertain due how unintentionally hilarious is, plus Raul Julia as Bison was incredibly good.
A 90's movie... that somehow has special effects that aged very well, and with some nice satires.
The acting is decent, some of the character aren't very well interpreted but you can see them growing and becoming better. For example, Rico changes from being a rich kid to a badass soldier, and you really see him getting better and better.
The special effects, aged well. The aliens look intimidating even when they have the graphics of a 2003-2004 videogame, but their roars and how they are rendered makes them intimidating. The fights have thrills too, you are worried about Rico and his people.
The plot, is kinda hit and miss. It's like a mix between a B-Movie and a drama, sometimes it takes itself seriously and sometimes it doesn't do it at all; I mean some characters even mock about some plot points.
The music is ok. The main theme is easily remembered, and the theme where they go down and fight the aliens for the first time is pretty dramatic and helps the scene. Too bad the rest of the soundtrack is not as good.
It doesn't matter if it is a bad adaptation of a book, it is a good movie on it's own.
Movie, you had one job to do, and it was being a good movie, and you blew it.
The acting is pretty ok, Kurt Russel and James Spader did pretty well on their respective roles, specially Russel, but the rest of the characters are very superficial, even the villager that Spader's falls in love with is not given a proper treatment.
The special effects are ok, but the fights are just so... lackluster, it gives you very few thrills because most of them are curbstomps, even Russel's fight with Horus is not safe from it. But the Stargate's sound and effects, are very memorable.
The plot was interesting at the start, but when Ra showed up... everything went downhill. His interpretation is very lackluster too, and he doesn't look intimidating; they should have hired a body builder or someone that will look intimidating.
Overall, despite heaving a pretty interesting setting, it did most things wrong. Should have been adapted into a TV Show instead of a movie.
