One can tell quite easily why this movie has divided critics right down the middle. The material is not only difficult to watch, it is problematic. It opens up viewers to imagine themselves in the shoes of the movie's protagonists. I was moved by the story and the thought behind the storytelling, and I hope you are provoked by it, too.
It's so boring and mindless that it's the perfect movie for when you want to doze off on sleepless nights. The only reason why I'm even giving this one and a half stars is for Frankie Faison's appearance as Lloyd.
With such powerful performances from Casey Affleck and Jason Hedges, this movie is a force to reckon with. The story remains challenging from start to finish. While the plot twists are jarring, the arc of the characters is realistic, troubling and every bit as unsettling as intended.
