Wonder Wheel (2017)
#WoodyAllenRetro Podcast Project Wonder Wheel is a great character drama that can feel more like a television play than a traditional Woody featur film and thats not exactly a bad thing. Stellar performances by Kate Winslet and Jim Belushi. Timberlake has improved since his other... middling performances and Juno Temple is quite good. The story itself is kind of drab and gets a bit more bleak as the movie progresses but again it's all about the performances and character interactions here. The technicolour cinematography is GORGEOUS and brings a new and welcome flair to set this apart from Woody's others. In total this is a GOOD film - it can feel a bit long in the tooth and Timberlake botches his final confrontation scene which is a big shame but the overall drama is pretty well cooked and the ending may leave some feeling miffed and not so chipper but we love it when Woody gives us a more realistic outcome in this genre. We don't think this is as accessible as his others in recent years but it fits right in line with his 80's dramas and we do have a sweet spot for that era in Woody's filmography

Café Society (2016)
#WoodyAllenRetro Podcast Project An extremely pleasant surprise, a character romance told over a good number of years where Eisenberg and Stewart provide truly mature and captivating performances, Carell is fine, cinematography is stunning and throwing us back in these times of hollywood and the club scenes are quite engaging and entertaining. The overall theme of choices made and following ones heart are quite well executed and even the more darker comedic elements involving gang murder and corruption add to the overall enjoyment and makes us feel like this is quite underrated from what we observe in the common consensus - the only real criticism to give here is the movie feels a bit over- stuffed with content and could be streamlined in hindsight... OR this would have made a much much better option as the Amazon tv series than what turned out to be the awful and uninspired 'Crisis in Six Scenes'.

Irrational Man (2015)
#WoodyAllenRetro Podcast Project With a great initial story idea and good cast what let's this down is a series of small inconstancies that just build up to make this quite the uneven and mishandled narrative - the overall feel is more like a light romantic comedy only to delve into a murder plot, a over-smitten college student and some very forced plot connivence to bring things to a poorly executed rehash of things done before ALOT BETTER. This whole university setting feels more like a 1980's campus than a post millennium one - this just does not work... and it's a shame too as the potential for another good murder quandary was in range but this is in way any fault of the actors, the script missed some real biting ideals that were clear in sight.. or so we thought :(
