A slow start soon gives way to a second act that is bewildering and brutal. The bouts of violence may seem extreme, but they're tempered by some truly laugh out loud moments. Elijah Wood is excellent as the estranged son visiting his father after a 30 year separation. Unable to connect with the man he meets, he gives a quiet, measured performance, shot through with moments of anxiety or sheer disbelief. An excellent script, deadpan one liners and great performances.
If this was meant to satirise how SOME Americans are ignorant of the world beyond their borders, it fails. It's just rubbish.
The torture scenes look a bit fake in places, but are still disturbing.
I switched off at the halfway point.
