Excellently acted movie, well-directed by Otto Preminger, but very dark, about a good musician who is trying to get off of heroin, but whose environment keeps tempting him back to it. The jazzy music throughout, by Shorty Rogers, is outstanding in its own right, and listening to it now evokes the ups and downs of the main character. If I had to live on a desert island, etc., this would be one I'd want to have with me.
This movie turned out to be unexpectedly tedious. The basic premise was so contrived as to be absurd. Some scenes that were worth 10 seconds were dragged out several minutes. Important plot points were just glossed over. Almost all of the male actors looked as scruffy as hobos, even when dressed in formal wear.
Mr. Peabody himself was very well done. Sherman not so much. Part of that was because I didn't like the enormous-headed drawing style, but part was that I don't remember the original Sherman as being such a dunce.
