Certainly not a movie for everyone. Helen Mirren is exquisite as always. Meanwhile, Michael Gambon is incredible as her pompous, foul-mouthed criminal husband. Strangely, this film's elegant offensiveness is as palatable as its artistic and intellectual mood and attention to detail.
I know I'm supposed to like this movie and all because of it's narrative on racism, but it was just not adequate. It was just ridiculously melodramatic. For a movie that is so obviously trying to tell an important story (and I don't disagree here about the importance of said story), it is so hackneyed and full of itself, I found myself being relieved it was over with absolutely no intention of ever seeing it again.
Contagion isn't a bad movie. Just disappointing really. I was a bit overwhelmed by the ensemble cast- most of whom are too good for this movie. As for the plot... It was lukewarm at best. People go to the movies for shock, drama, excitement- for a script that is motivational, thoughtful, fun or creative. Contagion is an insipid, unimaginative film experience. It would have been better tooted as a documentary.
