big All star cast!! Intersting concept. BUT like it's later TV series, which even then I've always called it Vorage To The Bottom of the Barrel, was weak and schlocky like so many of that era.
Interesting that RT reviewers gave it high marks, but todays audience Low regard.
Slow dull dreariest, dreckiest. Made even more so by the omotonous unrelenting portentous violin which never stops. Why was this movie made. Why was MALKOVICH cast with his oddball, dull, weird NY accent, in an 1800s ENGLAND movie. Most disconcerting. Everyone else at least tried to talk like an English. I will admit that on paper a part, a tiny part, of this movie may have been interesting. And the finale with the alter ego creature crawling under the skin was a relief from the boredom, but too late. And, boy, that must have hurt. Ruined a great novel for a lot of people, I'll bet.
MALKO's best was his seduction spook skip on SNL. And GLEN CLOSE was thankfully used just a little. And JULIA ROBERTS still riding on her supposed 'PRETTY LADY' reputation.
Finally saw it all on tv The Movie Channel 10.12.2021.
Far better than the reviews. Natch, the title & premise seem campy. But the movie takes itself seriously, for the most part. And most all the alligator scenes were realistic.
Saw it again on TV, 10.9.21, & pretty certain saw it in summer of 1959 on Catalina Island in the historic Avalon CASINO Theater.
PS: BEVERLY GARLAND was xlnt as the gator man's wife. & of LON CHANEY hisself as the half-crazed swamp guy.
