Alejandro G. Inarritu delivers an incredibly brutal experience unlike any other this year.
No, let me start by addressing the first issue people seem to have with The Revenant. It's slow, and it's long. Both of those things are true, however, I was not ONCE bored throughout the entire 160 minute runtime. Every major player in the movie, (DiCaprio, Hardy and the Ree) are all developed perfectly round within the first 30 minutes of this movie. You understand each individual and their motivations. And it keeps you going. DiCaprio delivers perhaps the best performance of his career in The Revenant. Punishably physical and incredibly desperate in his approach, Hugh Glass remains enthralling without having to speak most of the time.
Now, I almost never, ever comment about the Hair, Costumes and Makeup in a movie. As long as it's not super obvious, usually in a bad way, I tend to not even notice it all. But my god, the makeup team deserves the Academy Award. There has never been a character I wanted to be less than Hugh Glass. Usually when a movie shows someone being brutally mauled, it skips an entire week and shows them bandaged up, but in The Revenant you FEEL every inch of pain Glass is enduring because of how convincing the combination of the makeup and his performance is.
And of course, the master, Emmanuel Lubezki, makes the entire thing Eye Candy worthy of the price of admission on its own. He captured not just the beauty of nature, but the brutality of it, perfectly.
The Revenant is well worthy of all the praise someone dares give it. In fact, the weakest part of the movie in my opinion is Tom Hardy who earned himself an Oscar nod for his performance as Fitzgerald. Sure, it makes you earn the experience but anyone willing to dive in will be swept up in a fantastic cinematic achievement.
Under the masterful direction of Ryan Coogler and the fantastic script he co-wrote with Aaron Convington, Creed proves to be not just the best Rocky movie since 76, but perhaps ever.
It's said in the first scene - banking is boring. And The Big Short does little to convince you otherwise. The exposition scenes are cleverly done, but this screenplay is not Sorkin level, and the direction is questionable at times. Even a very talented cast has nothing too standout. It's a decent movie - but it doesn't deserve the praise it's getting.
