I didnt see this film first time around, but have just watched it on TV. Rooney Mara is truly wonderful in this film and it ends with you just wanting more. If a sequel is ever made, not casting her would be criminal.
I really wish Swedish films would have Swedish actors and English subtitles. But for this film, I was happy to make an exception. There are lots of themes mixed in this story, family love gone wrong, Nazism, corruption at the top and abuse. But friendship is also one of them too.
Im surprised to read so many bad reviews of this film on here.
One other reviewer wrote its just about life. Yeah, and thats what makes it such a nice film to watch! The dinner speech by Jim Broadbent has to be one of the funniest things Ive watched in ages. Its wonderful that the only person who appreciates it, is the pothead son of Jeff Goldblum.
This film is not a classic. But there are some great actors in the film - including the still very sexy at 60 Lindsay Duncan - and despite all the misery in the film, it still ends on a positive note. So cheer up! Perhaps the film is more like life than some dare to imagine.
Why exactly this film was made in English seems completely absurd! It's set in Sweden, with Swedish speaking actors and the late Trevor Howard as the Inspector. It would have been much better in Swedish with English subtitles.
A strange plot, the opportunities that the Inspector has to clobber Salem but doesn't use, clearly pushes this film into immediate jump the shark territory. Why does Trevor Howard drive to the asylum at the end for example, and not just phone to see if Salem is in his cell? It's hardly great policing from a character we are meant to respect.
Sometimes you get bad films with great actors in them. This is one such movie. Where did it all go wrong?
Arrival is overrated. Slow moving, one wonders why big actors like Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker are even in it. Amy Adams really is quite unconvincing in her role as a language expert. She speaks a few words of Mandarin towards the end and hey presto, she is suddenly fluent in alien. Talking of aliens, they probably steal the show with their oddly shaped spaceships and spider like design.
