just when you thought it couldn't get any Dumber
okay so you could knock off 2 stars automatically for the ridiculous premise that we would all turn into rampaging merdurous lunatics if given the chance for one night. it's the foundation from which this entire franchise has been built on. But that would be like shooting fish in a bucket. or more accurately shooting a fish that is right in front of your gun.
it's a vapid fleshless monstrosity bereft of any intelligence but that's not where I find fault. It's the slapdash storyline that's so predictable you would think an average 4th grade kid could have come up with something less obvious. That's what bothers me about this film. The people who wrote it were just so blah about the story. The Purge Election Year is an obvious money grab cashing in on it Superior prequels which actually weren't that good in the first place.
but with all that being said if you've got a little over an hour and a half to burn you could do a lot worse.
This movie is pretty fantastic and I highly recommend it! the acting is great, the fact that Patrick Stewart plays the protagonist doesn't seem weird, the script and the screenwriting are both pretty intelligent with the dark humor a film like this deserves. the characters seemed for real and I felt invested in them as I watched their fates unfold.
Jeremy Saulnier, the writer and director, pretty much knocked it out of the park! this movie is a little more fast paced then Blue Ruin and it's just as deeply disturbing.
I give it one star because it isn't entirely reliant on jump scares and the building in which the movie is shot is interesting.
As far as a plot characters script dialogue acting or any other element that you would normally associate with a movie that makes it a movie, none of that.
It is a consistently surprising film in that just when you think it can't get any Dumber they mash that pedal to the metal.
I have never seen anything like it! it's absolutely brilliant and weird! a man faces an existential crisis after his television breaks down. at this lowest of lows the forms and unlikely Bond with the fungus growing in his bathroom.
I think this movie is just about perfect! not a wasted frame and loaded with dark and intelligent humor!
Ugh sooo booooooring! if you've logged on to Flixster or rotten tomatoes to see what others are saying about this movie because you've started to watch it and you're now wondering "Is this ever going to get any better?" - it doesn't.
or maybe you're wondering "Does this story ever develop into anything other than the thuddingly obvious?" - again it doesn't.
"Is there at least a payoff if I sit through
all these long irritating unnecessary scenes of 4 unlikable characters being boring?" YES! A sad trombone. gwah-gwah-gwah...
