This is one of the sweetest, kindest, most unusual movies that I have ever seen.
I had just finished seeing Mark Duplass in THE CREEPIEST character a man could play on the show Goliath (with Billy Bob Thornton) -- honestly, the character completely turned my stomach -- and then, the next thing I see him in is this movie. He was wonderful. I will forever be a Mark Duplass fan as a result.
I'm pleasantly surprised that others enjoyed this movie as much as I did. Maybe society isn't completely lost after all ...
Unfortunately, I watched this the evening after I had seen "Hamilton." Ugh. Bad idea. Vanessa Hudgens was surprisingly good. Everybody else sucked. I love "Rent" and there is much in the way of truly good music in this show ... but my guess is these actors all had extremely good agents who sold their soul to get their clients these parts ... too many pretty faces and not near enough good voices.
I don't often say this, but this time ... LISTEN TO THE CRITICS RATING. The audience score ... my guess a bunch of bigots from the south got on here and gave this productions a low mark because "Jesus" and many of the other members of the cast were played by, shall we say, a diverse assembly of actors. Lordy, lordy ... it must drive these types CRAZY to hear the powerhouse voices of John Legend, Norm Lewis, and most importantly -- Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas. THIS MAN IS GLORIOUS. Easily the best voice I have heard ... maybe EVER. Also, the production was gorgeous ... lighting, sets, pacing ... everything was spectacular. If you are at all inclined towards enjoying all levels of musicals, orchestras, choirs, or opera ... you will love this. If you like country music ... go elsewhere.
I'm not very hard to please, so I gave this one four stars. LOVED all of the actors/actresses, LOVED the dance sequences. The whole premise was pretty clever ... just could have been executed better with better writing. Could have been funnier. But Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine are solidly great in my eyes ... and Liam Hemsworth ... this guy is so unbelievably underused. He is one of the funniest guys around. A very pleasant way to spend a couple hours.
An extremely interesting film. Usually, I can't really get into films where the characters are unlikeable. This film has a plethora of unlikeable characters, all of which are highly appealing. Melissa McCarthy is INCREDIBLE, as is Richard E. Grant. But Lee Israel is imminently interesting. Whoever wrote the screenplay did a spectacular job. I would imagine this has a shot at some kind of an oscar ... if anybody besides me saw it.
