Noah Baumbach outperforming his previous works once again. I can't lie - alluding to the show - I watched this for the director and not the cast (although I bet many would for the reverse). The setting right from the get go, leading you to think this was a happy loving beginning is immediately turned on its head, which I am not sure was hinted in the trailers(didn't regret this decision). The cinematography - from the panning scenes to the scene angles (notably at the start and especially conversations) were executed sublimely. And the raw dialogue- that classic Baumbach brilliance, shines through; leaving me in awe of its realism and constant self reminder how every scene was set with an intention/message.
I must give Johannson her due credit- the stunning raw scenes(her therapist session and heavy-handed interactions with Adam) would not have been possible without her superb craft, proving to younger audiences she is much more than just a one dimensional hot black widow.
Adam who stuck with Noah through his best works: Meyerowitz Stories & While We're Young, albeit as supporting casts is finally given a lead role and does not disappoint. His reticence synergises well with his role, creating fair contrast to Johannson's role which lends realism with its semblance to archetypes of modern day relationships.
As a young evergreen man, the depth of development we follow the 2 characters through their emotional journey sheds much needed perspectives into the faintly covered theme of divorce.
Was expecting a repetition of a whodunnit style murder mystery with a cast of higher budget. Only watched because I heard good comments on it from my friends. We start off with the discovery of the dead body- followed by interviews with each of the family members present that night- all an expected tale. Each member has a motive for killing(as per usual) and we are introduced to the party to is supposed to tie it all with her close relations to the deceased and who conveniently cannot lie. We now see a different sight to that night and suddenly we realise everyone else seems to be innocent if her recount is indeed true. It cannot be that easy right? More mysteries inundate our way, causing us to anticipate twists - doubting whether somewhere along the way there might be unreliable narrators. I leave you to it, but I must say the revelations were steered pretty well- not too draggy and not forced at the same time. A fantastic job to Director Rian and his producers!
Not as chilling as the predecessor, the Look of Silence still performs with the protagonist Adi as he journeys on road to confront the men who were behind the "communist exterminations" and personally, his brother's brutal death. For me, the best parts were watching his gradual organic approach to the elephant in the room whilst under the cover of a optometrist. This is truly a scene beyond acting of any kind.
Disapointing perhaps from a exceptionally full embodied first chapter and helped out by a well crafted movie trailer, IT justifies its second show with an exceptional cast and comical script. Horror Thriller shows don't do too well this long even though its obvious the writers wanted strong plot closure.
