It's teetering on being a reinterpretation of the old 'Beauty & the Beast' fable but this version of that story is definitely a bit more layered and complex with it's cyber world contrasting with the modern world. The filmmakers churn out a story that occasionally connects really well with viewers but the end result is severely underwhelming.
The subject matter and performances really jolt and fascinate but their effects eventually dwindle due to the constant reliance on exposition coupled with the entire story taking place in one social interaction.
The comedic portions of this rom-com ring true while the romantic side of the picture isn't compelling. Paul Thomas Anderson does however cast the two unknown leads perfectly and gets legitimately quality performances from the non-actors.
