Iron Man 3 is a decent character drama forced to be a superhero movie. Its twists are interesting, if a touch meaningless, but I found myself enjoying this film more than most. Tony doesn't have it all together in this film, the distinct billionaire dickhead mantra wears thin with his night terrors and sudden bursts of anxiety. And while the villain is at best forgettable, it still manages to hit home what makes a superhero so super in the first place.
Unlike a good-bad movie, Suicide Squad is just bad. Its editing is appalling, the acting seems forced or under-focused, and the plot is little more than "big bad wants to destroy the universe, stop them!" While the music in it screams of appealing to a distantly disinterested audience, the visual style and scene composition do more to add migraines than effective drama. Honestly, don't waste your time. Wait until someone who at least enjoys the subject material gets a shot at creating it.
This film is an example of effective comedy. It isn't the most intense or thrilling ride from beginning to end, but the raw talents of Gosling and Crowe (hell, even the supporting cast) add a charm that is almost infectious. It doesn't take itself too seriously, just enough for the stakes to feel real, and the seedy 70's setting adds a lot to the overall style. It's a fun romp at worst and a surprisingly adept drama at its best.
If Tarantino is anything, he's talented. His knack for tense dialogue and over-the-top gore provide a great style to tell a western tragedy - and I suppose that's what I'd call The Hateful Eight. The characters are well-played and well-written. The pace is pretty slow, but it complements the absolute craft involved to make it interesting. By the end, it delivers on Tarantino's violent delights in every way possible. It's a truly impressive spectacle to behold.
Fincher's distinctly medical (and somehow still intensely personal) way of filming brings such energy and power to each shot. The dialogue is witty and quick-paced, never failing to add extra gusto to an already well-executed scene. But what makes this film so successful are its occasional flourishes - an unexpected tracking shot, a brilliant realization shot, a comedic reverse - that bring all the more heart to a film about such a hard to understand story as the Zodiac's.
