Movies are always evaluated in two ways. They can be rated by the entertainment value. That is, remove all expectations, plot, history with the characters, etc. and purely rate the movie based on how entertained you are. There is also a rating assigned to a movie based on your expectations, fan status, questions you want answers for, the "vibe," and other factors. In terms of pure entertainment, I would give this movie high marks. The special effects were over-the-top, the characters were likable, and there was non-stop action.
Now, here comes the real review. We all know why we ran to see this movie. We wanted our fix. We love the franchise, we love the characters, and we have over 40 years invested in this. We expect a lot, and we deserve it.
Ok, here is where I hated it. In my opinion, the movie felt "rushed." Too many things packed in the movie. It was trying to be overboard funny, and to be honest, way too mystical for me. It didn't have the simplicity of a soap opera that the other movies had, and I was annoyed at how some of the storylines evolved without any explanation.
*Spoiler Alert -- stop reading if you didn't see the movie.**
I wish it would have explained how the Emporer managed to survive. I didn't understand the mystical powers of the piece that found the planet - isn't the force enough? There were so many holes in the story, and only a real Star Wars fan would notice. Not enough on the force, and it really felt like a Disney movie. There were so many other complaints I had as well, but if the movie had more of the vibe of the Mandalorian, I would have been satisfied. In the end, I felt disappointed about the movie, when I should have been sad the series is over. I have a feeling this is going to score high for those who want to see special effects, and a movie with everything, but as a Star Wars fan expecting more, I am not buying it. Two stars for me at most.
