Truly weird. The best aspect is the odd mix of science and supernatural. The ending...when it's revealed who that dark figure in the future is...well, it's one of the most unsettling moments in horror cinema.
Boy has this movie aged badly. Where Alien is timeless, this one is dead centered in the 80s. The sets look like some scaffolding, foil and insulation lit with blue light. Cameron's hive concept is rather unoriginal in retrospect-he just loves making direct references to earth animals, which of course makes the aliens less "alien."
What saves it? The amazing performance by Weaver.
