Great start to what's going to be an amazing tv series. If it weren't for the entirety of Episode 2, I would have given this a 4.5 stars, but I'm docking stars because of Episode 2. Why is Cumberbatch always wounding up in works that mystifies the "wonders of the East?" First, this Sherlock episode and then Dr. Strange. Anyways, episode 2 was another one of those Asian cultures portrayed in white-people media. As an Asian, I just couldn't relate to the way my culture was being portray on screen. It was SO cliche to see an Asian character speak in an accent (the actress doesn't have one in real life) + who lives in Chinatown + shy / quiet / nerdy... Asians to be portrayed as smugglers/bandits with a mysterious culture. There's enough of that "type" of Asian portrayed in white media. And it would've also helped a bit for Cumberbatch's Sherlock--being the walking encyclopedia--to actually know how to pronounce "Hang Zhou" correctly (it isn't not hang zoo)... Like, if you're going to try to make casting more inclusive / showcase cultures, at least do it right. Episode 2 was a disaster and, to say the truth, a bit offensive. With that said, the other two episodes, and the other following seasons were very enjoyable.
Sure, Season 4 may not have been as "good" as previous seasons, but it's still very good and a lot better than most television shows. This season is a pivotal one for Sherlock's character arch. It does a good job explaining why he is the way he is, and it's nice to see the "human" side of Sherlock, John, Mycroft, etc. I do feel like there were some minor plot holes but nothing unforgivable, so I don't understand why the low ratings... Anyways, hope this isn't the last of Sherlock!
Great for the season (Christmas special); nice to see the contemporary Sherlock in a different setting. Unexpected plot twists (as per usual) makes this special extra interesting and fun to watch.
