A fun, smart, female-driven (both in front of and behind the camera) film. In many ways, it was ahead of it's time (again both on and offscreen) in centering female stories and relegating the dudes to lackeys and eye candy. I have to say the bad reviews seem to mostly be from people who must resent that fact, but the truth is D.E.B.S is sexy, funny, action-packed, engaging, and sweet as well as inspiring, feminist, and hella queer.
This movie got a bad rep from some who didn't get it, and others only see "hot chicks with guns". I see a film that is entertaining and engaging (and yeah there are totally beautiful women kicking butt) and also layered as hell. It is built of layers while being an examination of layers- how we build them in our communities, in our shared imagination and mythologies, and in ourselves, and the powerful purpose they serve in creating, protecting, nurturing, and fortifying everything that matters to us. If all you see is the outfits, you only see the first layer, and this film is so much more than that.
This movie is delightful. Just a very well done rom com that isn't mushy or cringey but also doesn't try to overcompensate for happening to be a romantic comedy by veering hard into being sexist and crass (ie Judd Apatow movies). A good movie, genre notwithstanding.
