Nicole Holofcener can do no wrong. The biggest cinematic failing is that we are not availed more of her auteur greatness at a more regular interval. She is a master, an original, and this film (as well as all of her written/directed by films) is nothing short of fantastic!
This is Bogdanovich's true masterpiece, even if the critics can't get it together enough to fully understand this truth. It is a far superior film to TLPS, his level of skill growing in leaps and bounds, the visual aesthetic is matched by the writing and equally so by the onscreen talent. Just outstanding! And funny to boot! A must see!
people say this is Bogdanovich's masterpiece, but they are wrong. It's a mess. Yeah it captures some true moments of way back when, some that even hold up to today's standards, but overall it is a mess and it's just another boring western in a dusty old western town... and has nothing to do with the last picture show... it's no bueno
just terrible. miscast. mismade. mistake. if you are going to take in this story, do it the only way possible and read it.... it isn't a great book and it's a surprise that it was optioned for a movie, being as average a read it is, but the book does offer much great detail and imagination to fill in the gaps... the movie feels like it wasn't even shot in NYC for the NYC scenes and that it must have all been shot in Paris... which wouldn't be the worst thing if it was pulled off... but its a one note film with one note performances from the all star players... waste of their time and talents
