Slightly slow pacing but somehow still very captivating.
Feel like 3 stars is rounding it up a little. There should be an alternate cut without the groot-looking aliens plot line. And maybe better delivery of lines by Sophie Turner. I kept getting distracted, giving her the benefit of the doubt, wondering, "Was that the best take? Did they not have a better version of the scene?"
So I watched this on a plane, and felt as though I was only distracted, and barely entertained. Hardly lived up to the breadth and weight of what 'Dark Phoenix' should be; and was instead sort of forgettable.
Didn't remember liking this as much when released, but revisiting just now shows me it was actually (and relatively) kind of a solid movie. At least, better than I remember, and I'm giving it more credit for what it accomplished. As with every X-Men movie since the first, there are aspects that always leave me nonplused, or underwhelmed, but after divorcing ideas of what things should be or look like, it's perfectly entertaining.
Unique concept, flawed story and execution (the groom is almost unnecessary the whole movie.) Some pretty obvious story and character traits dull the polish of the production, though. Generally, a fun and thrilling movie.
