I have watched the first four episodes and enjoy the show. Reading some of the music critics reviews has been educational, though several sound jaded. While the show may only represent a middle-slice of the songwriting process, it's still interesting and entertaining.
The stars that Adam Levine and company have recruited to an untested, new show are pretty big deals in the hit music world, as are the producer/ songwriters on the panel. (Admittedly, I knew nothing about any of them, but they have had great success in the music industry in different genres, working with big names.)
Some criticism is aimed at (1) the level of full production that the songs come in the door with and (2) the often-extreme changes that happen in the collaboration sessions with the producers. While I appreciate that the budding writers seem to get steamrolled by the producers, it strikes me as likely close to reality. If you aspire to enter the world of "the commercial music industry," you'll need to be prepared to lose a good deal of creative control over your original song.
It would be interesting to learn what credit the "contestants" receive when the songs are published and whether they had to sign away all future rights and royalties. I expect so, as that may be part of the reason Levine was able to lure the artists he did. That part is a bummer, but I suppose the idea is that this exposure helps the writers potentially get a bigger break in their careers. ("Think of the exposure you'll get, kid!)
It's interesting television and I'll keep watching, even when I don't know much about the featured "star" guests. Good job so far,
