Follows some familiar coming-of-age-saga beats, but performs the whole endeavor oh so well. What a great movie.
What can I say that hasn't already been said?
Occult folk horror done right. Its careful pace, two outstanding leads, and ambiguous story culminate in a truly unsettling and captivating experience. That music.
The film is watchable enough--if you're utterly trashed. A lazy director took Tim Lebbon's far superior novel and a talented cast and made one of the most aggressively stupid movies I've ever seen. This is a paycheck movie that treats character, horror, and suspense dishonestly. Fast forwarded through the second half of the movie.
A poorly scripted, banal horror film that started so strongly, I thought it might prove to be another perennial Hallowe'en watch, but it soon ran out of steam, piling on scene after scene of derivative meh.
