The story itself is good, but the execution of the story is lamentable. The stilted, corny dialogue and the melodramatic acting style makes watching this unbearable. If it were remade today with complex subtlety, and realistic, minimalist dialogue, I'd be interested in giving it another go.
What a tragic missed opportunity. The book was one of my all time favorites, yet, as often happens, the powers that be ignored all that was wonderful about the book, and crafted their own little cartoonish tale that had very little resemblance to the book on which it was based.
A masterpiece! All aspects come together, from the writing and cinematography, to the stellar cast, with wonderful performances from Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Jude Law and Phillip Seymour Hoffman!
I always liked the idea of Star Trek better than its realization. This was a slow mover out of the gate, that never really gained momentum. We're half way through the movie before anything really happens. Even the uniforms were a disappointment. The original TV series had much classier uniforms than these banal wardrobe.
A bit slow paced, but considering it was virtually a one-man show, it kept my attention through to the end. SPOILER ALERT: my only complaint is the ambiguous ending. I would like to have seen verification, but I suppose, artistically speaking, they likely made the right choice.
