The surreal prosthetics alone combined with Barkers nightmarish storytelling make this a nostalgic feast of (excuse the pun) monsterous proportions.
Joker is a work of visual art that examines the dynamic between media, society and mental health, all done, using the iconic DC Joker charcter as a vehicle. The portrayal by Phoenix is faithful to the comic source and also adds extra dimentions to character. The sets and wardrobe perfectly create the aura of the 70's, the visual compositions are striking and are at times (i believe intentionally) straight out of a graphic novel paying homage to some of the source material. The movie also has a hauntingly apt score that creeps along with the main character in his decent into becoming increasingly unwell. I was sceptical when i heard this movie was announced, feeling it was unnecessary and was very pleasantly proved wrong. Best movie since Birdman
