Never thought I'd say Tiffany Haddish is the best part of a movie, but that seems to be the case in this film.
It just tries so hard to be quirky it's painful at times. Acting is great though.
I'm a little shocked at the high reviews. I get it's Scorsese and he's done wonderful work in the past, especially with De Niro, Keitel and Pesci (and it is truly wonderful to see Pesci again, he is a gem in this movie.) I think the high ratings are because of how the movie reminds us of "Goodfellas" and "Casino" more than anything else.
Acting is great, it always is and Scorsese is a great director for actors. However, not casting younger talent to show the age progression does make the movie feel stiff. I think it limited what the scenes could have been by sucking some of the energy out of them. Normally we see younger talent with makeup to make them look old for a good reason.
Outside of the actors, overall the movie just felt like any other movie that's an hour too long. There weren't any epic shots (or lines or scenes for that matter) or any specific frame you could pull from the movie that could be a one-sheet. Sure there were some cool shots but they're forgettable. The staging wasn't complex or interesting (though, Scorsese was never known for that.) And the lighting was just average and at times called too much attention to itself (in a bad way.)
If you're a fan, yes you should watch it if not for any other reason than nostalgia. But if you're not a fan, I mean, it doesn't add anything to the genre, nor is it a good end piece for the great work these guys have done in the past.
To sum it up, the movie kind of feels lower budget at times. Makeup, SFX, music, and acting is superb. Script, editing, and Directing is just average (mostly because it's not imaganitive. DP work leaves something to be desired. I think there was too much reliance on post to fix things up and you could tell.
