Silence of the Lambs characters minus Hannibal Lecter and Jack Crawford? Check.
Hack writer Alex Kurtzman? Check.
Generic CBS procedural? Check.
As demonstrated by the weak early episodes and the fact producers decided to proceed without most of the franchise's most compelling characters demonstrates that this is a blatant cash grab attempt using name recognition from Thomas Harris' brilliant source material. This show never had a chance.
Yet another crime show that uses out of order narrative and amnesia with bits of horrific flashbacks sprinkled in to try to make the writing appear more clever than it is and try to string the audience along for 8 hours. By the 3rd episode, my tolerance for the wooden acting from Jessica Biel, glacial pace, pointless character development, and useless dead end side arcs had reached its limit. Most of the story is nonsense, but skipping all the filler in episodes 3-6 would make this a much more entertaining experience.
Attractive cinematography, wardrobes, and big name actors are not enough to overcome weak writing, poor character development, and endless time filler dead end narrative arcs. Definitely not enough to hide the fact that this is a thinly veiled attempt to cash in on the success of Big Little Lies. Should have been titled "Big Little Lies, East Coast". Did not enjoy being made to wait around for 6 hours for something approaching a conclusion when there was really only enough story to fill a 90 minute movie.
Great example of how true crime storytelling should be done. Compelling story, charismatic detectives, and truly irredeemable suspect.
One important detail the creators left out was the fact that Ramirez chucked the infamous Avia shoes from the Golden Gate Bridge after Dianne Feinstein spilled all the inside information from the investigation by holding a press conference that should have ended her political career. I believe the legal term for what she did is aiding and abetting a fugitive.
Finally! Star Wars storytelling that doesn't feel like a betrayal and strong start to the series. Some episodes become predictable and repetitive. Underlying it all is a true respect for the original source material and characters.
Such a huge disappointment after 4 magical seasons of incredible writing! Guess the producers ran out of ideas and had to hire Twitter to do all the writing. Unfortunately, 2020 and the producers of the show had one last nasty trick for us: turning a golden egg into a real stinker.
