....Somehow I think too many critics have falsely maligned this crime flick...
It's really not that different FROM countless other American action films except
that in this case, it's not really 'good' guys going after 'bad' guys....
...In this case there aren't any 'good' guys at all- just a case of whose
behaviour is the worst of all...If this were a film franchise with a favorite
'name' actor in it, I believe a lot more film goers would be OK with seeing
the 'baddest' eggs getting their just deserts...Perhaps also ,since the story
line was pulled from a graphic novel in which the USA was rapidly in danger
of becoming a police state , which many of us believe is happening daily in 'real time',
that analogy has made many people uncomfortable with the amoral violence
that happens in this film....Maybe if the Gerald Butler look-alike main actor
had actually had that wildly popular action star in it, there wouldn't be so
many negative ratings on this typical run-of-the -mill crime film...It's certainly
not the worst popcorn flick I've ever seen....
I THINK I JUST SPENT LESS THAN 10 MINUTES WATCHING A FREE HD YOU TUBE OFFERING OF THIS FILM THIS MORNING AND NOW AM WONDERING WHY I
WASTED SO MUCH TIME ON SOMETHING THAT LOOKED UTTERLY BLAND TO ME....
I'LL GIVE IT THIS- IT'S AN HONEST FILM AND THAT'S A POSITIVE...THE ACTING
IS NATURALISTIC. AND THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL BELIEVABLE , BUT I DIDN'T
CARE A LOT ABOUT THE 'LADY BIRD' CHARACTER-MY SYMPATHIES WERE MOSTLY
FOR HER MOTHER , WHO HAD SO MANY RESPONSIBILITIES DUMPED ON HER...
COMPARED TO HER MOTHER, THE DAUGHTER CAME ACROSS AS TOO DAMNED
SELF-CENTERED FOR ME TO ADMIRE MUCH ABOUT HER AS A PERSON....(SORRY
ABOUT ALL THE CAPS- MY KEYBOARD IS FIGHTING ME)...MAYBE I'M JUST TOO
OLD TO UNDERSTAND LADY BIRD'S MOTIVATIONS,BUT EVEN IF I WERE YOUNGER
I WOULDN'T THINK MUCH OF THIS KIND OF PERSON ....TOO SELF-SERVING FOR
I've always despised the Baby Bush/Uncle Cheney team for choosing to
start a war of choice in Iraq without actually proving that Saddam Hussein
was in possession of materials needed for building atomic bombs...
I believe this film and historical data actually prove that people in the White
House knew they had insufficient evidence for going to war, but they did so
anyway, which made this the most shameful American military action of the
20th century...Well acted by Ms. Watts and Mr. Penn..The Wilson family did
nothing wrong, Bush & Cheney were re-elected in spite of "100,000" (plus) Iraqi
deaths,& 40,000 US casualties. Cheney's Halliburton grossed 3 billion dollars
from said war, while Ms. Wilson was outed as an undercover CIA agent and lost
her job and Scooter Libby went to prison (but not for very long). And now The
USA is back to the same-old, same- old (lying in High Places)....Some things never seem to change...
First- I was surprised that this was an A24 film, a smaller Indie company
that usually puts out well-intentioned " Message" films with lesser-known
stars than Adam Sandler ....I don't remember ever being bored watching
any of their films and "Uncut Gems" was no exception...I'm impressed enough
to give it a solid 4 stars....Since this film revolved around a compulsive gambler,
it had a negative ending ( Which made it all that more realistic for me)...Apparently,
many film-goers aren't happy when "reel life" shows it's dark side.... (But that's
what impressed me the most here)....
