One of the best horrors of that era due to Carpenter's ability to give you everything. A wicked monster, constant hysteria, great effects, unexpected twists and plenty of scares.
I love how creative the horror is, and it's one of the most straight-forward stories, kills you in your sleep. Very smart, very scary, and an enjoyable ride from beginning to end. A must-watch for horror enthusiasts.
The only reason I didnt give it the full 5 stars is because it's very long. But it's evil, disturbing, twisted and phenomenal. There is so much you have to pay attention to throughout, which gets difficult given its length. When everything finally comes together, it's so well done. I read someone say The Exorcist meets Silence of the Lambs after watching it, and I couldn't agree more, but with an ending as twisted as The Wicker Man. A must watch if you have two-and-a-half free hours and no distractions so you can focus on as many details as possible.
Dafoe & Pattinson are outstanding and take you on a wild, psychological, roller-coaster ride. The visual portrayal of the era is spot on as well. That being said, it's a very very slow movie, and the story's execution is simply strange. Very little actually goes on. The dialogue also gets obscure, so I highly recommend watching with captions the first time. It's essentially a disaster survival story, with a drunken, hallucinogenic power struggle when booze become the only resource left. It's really a matter of are the actors dynamic enough to overcome a subpar plot with a whole lot of nothing? I'm sure a reason for the lack of plot was to show off their talent. And they sure do, but there's a clear gap between the acting and the substance of the movie. If you like both actors, it's worth watching but be patient with it.
You know when you're listening to an EDM/dance song and there's the buildup before the drop? Think of it as a good buildup but the drop comes & it wasn't worth thaaaat much buildup. Good movie, good shooting, good music to set the scenes, and solid idea. The anticipation led nowhere at times though or they babied you into the scare. Felt like there was more they could've done to tell the story & execute.
