Blah! Two memorable actors (Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper) in two very forgettable roles. "Mad Max" on water but dreary and dull. It would be excusable if the budget they spent on special effects went beyond driving jet skis off a ramp but there's is nothing impressive in this movie. It looks every bit of approaching 30 years old and might as well be 40 years old in its appearance and narrative. It's cheesy through and through. Cheesy can be likeable but it clearly was not intended to be so it doesn't work here. Just because hardly anyone likes it means it's a "cult classic" here folks. In this case, it simply just means it's bad.
Though the performances are solid enough, it's depressing. The c.g.i. for the tree is nice but I wasn't impressed with the other artwork. If I had kids, I'm not sure I would pick this one out. I'd prefer some timeless classics or something lighter and more upbeat for family movie time.
