One of my most cherished classic films for many reasons. It possesses a rare ability to be enjoyable at any age in life. As a child this film gave me nightmares, the witch and the tornado instilled fears in me that would last for years. I am still scared of tornadoes, just the though still makes break out in a cold sweat. Even with that kind of trauma, I still loved to watch this as a child. Any time it was on TV, I would always watch it, and regret it later. :-)
As an adult I still love this film, the songs and the grand scale of things still hold up. The memorable characters, and so many emotions brought back up from childhood viewings. I am not great at remembering songs completely but I can sing nearly every song in this film to the end, and enjoy every one too. Hope you get to experience this film at all ages of your life, so you can get the full experience. It's gotta be in my top 5 films ever!
A modern whodunit masterpiece! This is on my short list of the best modern films I've ever seen. Great acting, great story, beautiful scenery and a magnificent mansion. Some nice surprises in this from some people we haven't seen in a while, like Don Johnson and M. Emmet Walsh. The storytelling and quality of directing stand out evenly alongside this stellar cast. It's a story of greed, sibling rivalry, and a nice dose of detective drama. I want more films like this, from this or any director of this genre. Proud to say I've seen this multiple times, and it will be worked into my yearly rotation.
This review is brought to you by, someone who can't stand Will Ferrell's films in general, I'm looking at you Kicking & Screaming. I rarely watch a Will Ferrell film more than once except Elf. Because yes he is great in that film. But here we have another exception to the rule. John C. Reilly can hardly do any wrong in my eyes, so Reilly thrusts this film over the top of enjoy-ability for me, coupled with Will Ferrell giving a great effort and playing the role of a spoiled brat to a T. The film has a ridiculous premise, but that's part of the fun here, and there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. Great supporting cast, good gross out humor, and toilet humor. This is your rainy day go to adult comedy. Arguably the best pairing from these two actors together.
Over the top, extremely bloody, ridiculous and unbelievable scenes where our heroine shouldn't be alive. Now that we have gotten that out of the way and said, I enjoyed this revenge horror film. It gets a lot of love from reviewers, but I'm not in love with it. It is just pure unadulterated, bloody good fun from start to finish. If you are looking for a good flick where the hunted becomes the hunter, this is for you. It is worth watching for the bloody chase scenes alone. Grab some popcorn, and some friends, and enjoy the blood soaked battles ahead.
I really wanted to like this. It is hard for me to give this a below average rating, but the ending really let me down. Dave Franco as a director makes a nice effort; however, given the subject matter and expectations set within the story and what we are shown on screen, the ending just lacks and strays away from those expectations. Everything about this film shows promise, but I feel the ending should have been on a director's cut of the film, and we the audience should have gotten what we wanted. That probably sounds selfish, but at the end of the day, this is a psychological horror/slasher film, and started out like a popcorn flick. I love Dan Stevens and Alison Brie, and without actors like them, this film wouldn't be nearly as entertaining for me. Which brings me back to why I am giving the low score. Without the solid acting, what would you have here? Good effort from Dave Franco, I am expecting him to only get better as a director.
