Everything Quentin does is a love poem to styles and colors of movies and cinema that made him who he is today. This particular love poem is a beautiful tapestry that is sown together from different points in time. It wont matter that you dont understand everything yet because the acting and the on screen chemistry keeps you focused on every word. Everyone here is specially chosen and directed a specific way. Q always has a certain crowd of talent he likes to pull from. People he personally loves. This kind of bond between cast and crew allows something fun like Pulp Fiction to really stretch out and enjoy itself. You can tell when you watch it. Its a great fun movie for adults who grew up wanting to be the bad guys instead of the good guys. Its very real in its depiction of life in the 90s in a drug infested low income part of the country. He keeps the perspective on everyday people in the movie as realistic as possible to how we would act and talk. From the arguments between lovers to the open and honest drug dealing. It all felt very real to me because I come from that world myself. Everyone knows this is the best thing Q has ever done. But its far from the only thing worth watching of his.
If you were lucky enough to have been around when the movie first came out then youd know that no one spoiled it and no one knew the plot until they saw it. THis means, I was completely thrown for a loop in this dark, moldy, moody drama. This movie is smart. It is at times funny. It is brutal. It speaks to young mens angst and energy and anger. It speaks to middle aged mens angst and energy and anger. Its about saying no to being a hamster in the wheel. Its about forcing everyone else off theirs, one punch in the face at a time.
The movie is a great , raw, bold piece of storytelling. No doubt about it. However, im highly sensitive and get absorbed into worlds and things much more deeply than most and so I found this movie to damage my soul a little. You can try to shield yourself from the raw violent scenes but edward norton is such an amazing actor that you get twisted along with him and then when you continue on his journey to a different path, your still left feeling the scars that nortons character has surpassed. Ive only ever watched this movie once a long time ago. I remember most of it vividly and half of it not at all. Guess which parts I vividly remember.....yeah. Thats why I only watched it once. Its just a little powerful and too effective at what they do here. Thats not a negative. Its an amazing positive. I just could only absorb this once. Be warned, this isnt your snowflake directors social justice message. Its about telling a story about one mans journey from one side to the other. I love how directors were able to tell storys in this fashion without stepping on the viewers personal beliefs. If you really want to get through to people, study this formula. They dont, because they dont have the stomach and the testicles to make something this raw and good.
They dont make em like this anymore. The focus is brilliant acting and directing and set pieces. That used to be the holy trinity of great movies. Anyway this drama is deeply engaging. The costumes and narration style done by brad pitt was a nice touch. Usually that style of narration falls flat but they only use it here and there to help set up a scene with some backstory before going into interactive dialogue. The child actress for the young vampress does an amazing amazing job. That young girl probably has the most impressive performace from an actor in the movie. She has an insane amount of energy and natural comfort inside her role. She was a true pro. Tom cruise always brings something from deep deep inside to help him emote and this movie is no different. He looks great in his costume. He sounds great. He IS great in this movie. Brad Pitt also brings that special magic of stepping inside a character and his facial expressions alone are powerful enough to move you, let alone his moments when he really explodes on screen. Then , even though you are hardly left wanting for more star power or performance, enter Antonio. The accent, the hair, the fingernails, the desire to possess. All of that passion he tries to control with a tempered mind. Brilliant job he did with his role also. The movie is just one great acting performance after another. Its one of my favorite dramas with a cool vampire element that isnt done this cool anymore.
I really hate that guy though. I hate his acting style and his voice and his face. How he managed to keep me entertained though as this super hero while still being his normal annoying self was actually quite brilliant of him to pull off. I really liked this movie a lot even when at times I really wanted to hate this guy. Thats a job well done.
