A great film that manages to be at once a crime story, a deeply human narrative, and a social portrait, without ever feeling heavy-handed or didactic. A unique, powerful, and unforgettable work. Its strength lies above all in its tone: much like the finest Italian cinema of its golden age, it blends genres effortlessly. It brings to mind Il Gatto by Luigi Comencini, as well as Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion by Elio Petri, the latter also an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, stories in which crime intertwines with comedy and a strong social dimension. This is no coincidence: Bong Joon-ho has a deep knowledge of Italian cinema and clearly absorbs its spirit. Just think of Parasite, which in some ways echoes the fierce and grotesque soul of Ugly, Dirty and Bad by Ettore Scola, in the way it portrays social inequality by blending tragedy, irony, and cruelty.
