Kirk Douglas has an extreme case of mid-life crisis in Elia Kazan's turgid melodrama (adapted from his best-selling novel). Douglas plays successful advertising executive Eddie Anderson, who cracks under the strain of the morning rush hour in Los Angeles and plows his sports car into a truck. Landing in a convalescent home, Eddie remains mute to everyone except his boss Finnegan (Charles Drake). Kazan seems to have turned his search for identity into a callous soap opera, unworthy of a man of Kazan's true talent.

The movie finally pounds at our moral sense so much that our moral sense wearies and becomes defensive, and we are finally just grateful for Faye Dunaway's beauty, and the way she doesn't raise her voice.

Flat searching for meaning drama with high quality cast ill served by the director and script. Deborah Kerr's role as a doormat of a wife is beneath her. Faye is incredibly beautiful here.

A chaotic but thrilling collage of semi-formed ideas. There are as many moments of inspired acting as there are moments of miscalculation and confusion. Visually wild and very different from most of Kazan's other work.
