Burt Reynolds is excellent here, playing a flawed but charismatic lead, and the prison football concept works really well. The humor feels natural and not forced, and the movie balances laughs with genuinely intense moments. What really makes this film stand out is that it has more substance than Smokey and the Bandit. While Smokey leans mostly on style and light comedy, The Longest Yard actually gives you something to invest in emotionally. The underdog story, the rough prison setting, and the build-up to the final game keep the movie engaging throughout. The football scenes are entertaining and rough around the edges in a way that fits the tone, and the supporting cast adds a lot of personality. See more Blu B @RT43513976 02/06/2025 A Football Comedy Classic. Biggest complaint is the music is jsut alright and very forgettable overall. But everythign else is good about it overall. It's not gonna win any awards but it tells a fun little story and does so competantly and has a charm to it. Humor is half decent but the story and setup is what makes it clever and memorable. The prison setting and Burt Reynolds are the two best things in this. The team is good. I like and remember certain members more than others but overall I liked the whole group. Kind of gave me The Replacements sort of vibes. The game itself, i'll say this if you don't know football that well you'll be lost half the time but you can figure out enough during the key moments like the score and ending to follow it enough. The football scenes are done pretty well though and it's cool to see 70's style football. During the middle it can feel a bit muddled when it's assembling the team and showing them bonding and getting better. It defintely isn't told in the sharpest way and no one besides Reynolds has much depth to them. But it's a feel good sports movie with a couple laughs with a unique setup. And it does it well. Anyone who is a fan of the director, any actors in this, 70's comedies, or sports movies should check this out. See more Read all reviews
