Based on the Stephen King short story The Body, Rob Reiner's easygoing nostalgia piece is set in Castle Rock, OR, over Labor Day weekend, 1959. A quartet of boys, inseparable friends all, set out in search of a dead body that one of the boys overhears his brother talking about. The foursome consists of intellectual Gordie (Wil Wheaton), born leader Chris (River Phoenix), emotionally disturbed Teddy (Corey Feldman), and chubby hanger-on Vern (Jerry O'Connell). The boys' adventures en route to the

Reiner seems lost in his own cinematic wilderness -- button-down careful, almost afraid to move
Good luck choking back the tears, folks.
Scripters have written inspired dialog for this quartet of plucky boys at that hard-to-capture age when they're still young enough to get scared and yet old enough to want to sneak smokes and cuss.
Rob Reiner's direction hammers in every obvious element in an obvious script.
It's as effective in 2009 as it was upon its initial release, and the richness of its tapestry, densely woven from human emotions and character interaction, ensure it will never lose that relevance.
Stand By Me is a sentimental film that works because of its unsentimental moments -- in particular, its sometimes embarassingly honest portrayal of what interests boys and how they talk about it.
Well-crafted coming-of-age tale, now best remembered as the cornerstone of River Phoenix's scant legacy.
...a timeless coming-of-age drama.
A near-perfect coming-of-age story peppered with regret, pain, nostalgia and love.
The 25th anniversary of Bob Reiner's film again shows why the film has become a classic on childhood, and it lso pays tribute to the talent of the late and great River Phoenix.
A well-observed and executed little film.
One of the best coming-of-age stories ever made.
Reiner's film, based on Stephen King's autobiographical novella, is suffused with the magic of childhood; the narrative is framed by a long flashback that brings distance to the remembered reality.
Haunting coming-of-age drama; young River Phoenix's presence adds considerable poignancy
The film is so well-observed and so energetically acted by its young cast that mawkishness is kept at bay.
A real genius film (especially the storyline), that truly captures the real essence of a childhood. This film carries pretty much every emotion there is: from happiness to sadness, and from disappointment to satisfaction. It is a classic that every person young to old should definitely watch.

Whether frightening (THE SHINING, CARRIE) or thought-provoking (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE), Stephen King's adaptations have made me a total push-over for almost any work of his. As STAND BY ME is a coming-of-age adventure/drama, I expected it to feel like a late-'50s-set roller coaster ride. Little did
