The first film adaptation of the Marvel Comics character The Punisher is a decent action film that could have been much better, but this is still an entertaining film to watch. Dolph Lundgren gives a good performance as Frank Castle/The Punisher, and along with Ray Stevenson who would later play Frank Castle in
Punisher: Warzone, he is the best actor for the part. This first film is a good popcorn flick that does lack something to really make it a memorable action film. As it stands, this version of The Punisher is a decent take on the action hero, but for me, anyway is not the definitive Punisher film. Dolph Lundgren however delivered here, and he definitely had the intensity the character deserved, not only that but he gave a performance that saved the film from being a total missed opportunity. The film was a decent effort, nothing too great, and it did have some good action scenes. However, the film could have been done much better. The films strength is the effective action scenes that are highly entertaining and violent. The film lacks however in effective storytelling and the plot is kind of weak. I wouldn't call this film the worst Punisher adaptation, but this is a film that could have been improved on. The action scenes are great, and I guess in the end, that's what it comes down to. A decent 80's action film that does deliver some good action, and decent thrills.
