Movie Info

A pair of lawyers must balance their professional principles (such as they are) against family loyalties in this courtroom drama. Jedediah Ward (Gene Hackman) is a leftist lawyer who has based his career on helping people avoid being taken for a ride by the rich and powerful; he's pursued principle at the expense of profit, though he has a bad habit of not following up on his clients after their cases are settled. Jed's daughter, Maggie (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), has had a bad relationship

Apted gives this smarter-than-average script a slick look and expertly develops suspense.

It is the fierce accord between Mastrantonio and Hackman that distinguishes the movie.

What I liked best was the way the whole legal case and all of its twists and turns were used to force the Hackman and Mastrantonio characters into learning things about themselves.

Works like an above-average TV-flick ... only with better actors.

Class Action is one of the rare films that combines a truly affecting family crisis with a good potboiler.

Director Michael Apted has taken what could have been a routine courtroom drama and built instead a stunning study of familial love and misunderstanding.

Managed to take one of the most contrived plots I've ever seen and make it seem, if not original, then at least way above average.

Do you remember when Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was supposed to be the next big thing and then she vanished after Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? Perhaps we should have seen the future forecast here. A very plain and ordinary movie based on a slightly interesting premise. Blah! Only see this if you are bored.
