Cliffhanger Reviews
We are not at Cliffhanger for realism; we're there for the cliffhanging, and there's plenty of it.
Film4
Big-budget nonsense that still manages to provide plenty of thrills thanks to its high-rise settings.
TV Guide's Movie Guide
It may go down in screen history as the nail in the coffin of the Die Hard sub-genre, in which all the key elements of that blockbuster have been recycled to the point of self-parody.

Despite the don't-look-down Olympian settings, Cliffhanger's spirit is brutal and earthbound. The movie is like one of those computer-designed simulator rides that whip you around until you're dizzy and aching but don't actually take you anywhere.

As preposterous as this "Die Hard on a mountain" flick is, Cliffhanger remains one of the zestier big-budget action pictures of the nineties. [Blu-ray]

Cliffhanger lives up to its title as a two-hour rollercoaster ride that never stops.
Fun for the undemanding, but Stallone's 'comeback' should have been much tighter.

A popcorn summer movie with Stallone where he belongs, in the wilderness as a primitive hero fighting villains and the elements.

This rote and by-the-numbers contribution to the early-90s glut of big, loud, dumb action movies was momentarily thrilling on a big screen back in 1993.

Cliffhanger is everything you'd expect from a summer blockbuster starring Sylvester Stallone--big, predictable, and dumb as houses.

A predictably thick-headed, occasionally plodding bacchanalia of blood, grunts and testosterone.
Whether Cliffhanger will bring Stallone's name back into the top echelon of action movie stars has yet to be determined, but if this film can't, the task may be impossible.

Just pull the plug on your judgment, good sense and values. Remember to leave enough motor skills to face forward -- that's where the screen is.
Austin Chronicle
No matter how many goods actors surround Stallone, it's still his remarkable presence that's the main attraction.

When Cliffhanger is doing its Vertigo thing, it is an incredibly effective thriller, with an opening scene that is so intense audience members will work up a sweat and strain their fingers gripping the armrests on their theater seats.
