DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 5 days ago Fulci doing Poe… Steeped in occultism, madness and feline malevolence, The Black Cat is very neat exercise in suggested menace, presenting its titular domesticated house pet as a dangerous creature genuinely capable of harbouring evil intent. It's certainly a loose adaptation of the text, using Poe as a springboard for an altogether different piece but nothing flows particularly well, stuff just tends to happen without much rhythm or reason but it demonstrates Fulci's talent for creating a truly gripping atmosphere. The Black Cat isn't purr-fect, often chasing its own tail but it packs plenty of claws, even if it occasionally struggles to land on all four paws. Together with Sergio Salvati, Fulci once again creates a magical atmosphere all of his own; Pino Donaggio's score fits perfectly. The directorial ideas ensure that "The Black Cat" never gets boring, even if it's sometimes difficult to follow the plot. Perhaps I was distracted by the many extreme close-ups of eyes... The actual plot itself is overly ridiculous and a little stupid, it doesn't really crave suspense or tension but far better than initial thoughts on paper as the final product isn't all that stupid or boring as it would sound.
