Movie Info

Bernhard Wicki's directorial debut, this is an excellent little film with little plot and no known names on the roster. In the final days of World War II, German teenagers join the Nazi army in a futile attempt to stop the enemy invasion. A sympathetic officer places the boys as guards of a seemingly unimportant bridge. The seven youths are thrown into battle when American tanks unexpectedly appear and try to cross the bridge. The film has a definite anti-war message. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovimore

One of the best anti-war movies ever ... it's unusual to see German soldiers portrayed in a human light, much less courageous teenagers who think they are doing the right thing.

a devastating portrayal of enthusiasm for the glories of war, fueled in equal parts by youthful naiveté and political indoctrination, crashing against the realities of human bloodshed

That it is Hitler doing the exploiting has little relevance to the overriding theme of tragic history humanity remains doomed to repeat: sending naive young men--and, at some times and places, boys--to their ends.

Audience Reviews for Die Brücke (The Bridge)

A really great and interesting view of the war. I really connected with the kids and found myself pleading that the Americans would'nt come over the bridge, even though I'm British. A heartfelt story or the useless war losses.
