As Shakespearean adaptations go, it's not quite as odd as moving The Tempest to another planet (as in Forbidden Planet) or Hamlet to a Canadian brewery (the secret subtext of Strange Brew), but it's still safe to say no one was expecting a version of The Taming of the Shrew set in an American high school. But unlike the previously mentioned films, 10 Things I Hate About You at least gives the Bard screen credit for his contribution to the story. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford

At times the pic doesn't even seem certain which decade it's set in; the squeaky-clean high school environs often feel more '80s than '90s.
Stiles nails her feminazi, bound-for-Sarah Lawrence shtick, but just as easily melts into giggles or pulls off a slapstick drunk scene.
The movie wimped out by blanding down the story and the characters to the point where she isn't really a shrew and he isn't really a maniac.
The notion of a contemporary high school as a hotbed of romantic intrigue is utterly apt, and the performances almost make the update work.
As satirical as it is romantic, this is one teen film that is wise enough to span generations in its appeal.
No one in this film is a big star, but everyone is a capable actor.
Steeped in a smartness and sincerity becoming of its Shakespearean roots.
A good but patchy romantic comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You does not break new ground, but there are plenty of surprises that will insure a good watch.
Engaging but edgy update of Taming of the Shrew.
...a slightly above average teenage romcom.
Takes an old story and proves the themes are timeless by applying them to a modern setting.
Gil Junger's TV roots are revealed in his excessive reliance on close-ups and the cast's preponderance of TV actors.
It sounds awful, but Junger's movie is utterly winning.
Stiles grows into her character and Ledger is effortlessly charming.
Pure of heart and perfectly executed.
Of all the teen films released this year, this one is, by far, the best.
The largely unknown cast sparkles.
10 Things I Hate About You is afunny and sweet high school movie that I enjoyed. The storyline is just omay, I enjoyed the characters a lot but the main plot seems done before and cliche, but I still had fun. The cast was really good, Heath Ledger is always a joy to watch, and Joseph Gordon Levitt is such a sweet guy
